There is so much emotion when a death occurs, and nothing quite prepares us for it. Your initial response will depend on the circumstances.
If your loved one dies while in the hospital or nursing home, the hospital or nursing home personnel will assist you. You will need to be able to answer the question: What funeral home will you be transferring the body to? Your first call should be made to the funeral home of your choice.
If your loved one dies at home and it was expected, the physician caring for the deceased will be able to pronounce the death and this is the person you should contact first. You can then call the funeral home of your choice to remove the body and follow the personal wishes of the deceased.
If your loved one dies at home unexpectedly, you will need to contact your local police department. They will dispatch an officer and contact a local coroner or medical examiner who will then decide the level of investigation necessary to determine the cause of death. After that time, you will be able to contact the funeral home of your choice.
Yes, Cedar Hill Cemetery is required by law to keep the original certificate on file.
Grave liners and vaults are outer burial containers that the casket is placed into prior to burial. The main purpose is to support the weight of the earth around the casket to keep the grave from caving in over time. Certain areas and circumstances within the cemetery do require grave liners/vaults. Our superintendent will be able to inform you if you need one. It’s a separate purchase when making arrangements, generally through the funeral home, and is not included in the plot prices.
Cedar Hill Cemetery charges a grading fee when a grave liner is not used, or excessive settling has occurred and will be accessed as needed.
Cedar Hill Cemetery serves families from all over the country, but predominantly from the Long Island, NY region. While located in the beautiful village of Port Jefferson, there is no family residency requirement.
Cedar Hill Cemetery is non-sectarian, welcoming people of all faiths and religions.
There are no discounts for the purchase of multiple plots.
Absolutely! You can prepay for your plot or plots, but just know that there will be opening fees associated at the time of death.
Cedar Hill Cemetery’s payment plan allows you to make payments over a 24 month period. To calculate the cost, take the cost of the plot or plots and divide it by 24 to get your monthly payment. There’s a one-time administrative fee of $100 to set up and monitor the plan. This is an interest-free plan.
Double depth means that 2 burials can be made in the same plot. The first burial will be interred deepest into the earth, with the other burial on top.
Cedar Hill Cemetery deals with several different local monument dealers, but ultimately the choice is yours. Two local monument dealers are Alan E. Fricke Memorials and John Esposito Memorials. It’s recommended that you deal locally. Monument Size Guidelines are listed in detail on the pricing sheet.
After you’ve contacted a reputable monument dealer to discuss monument size and inscription, the monument dealer will mail a copy of the proposal to the cemetery for approval. At that time, the dealer will also include a check for the foundation installation. After our review, our deposit of your check is our acceptance and permission to proceed. Feel free to call the Superintendent for updates at any time, 631-371-6113.
Cedar Hill Cemetery installs all foundations for monuments. The foundation fees depend on monument size and are listed within the monument size guideline on the pricing sheet.
Cedar Hill Cemetery works hard to maintain a beautiful and serene place for people to quietly reflect and remember their loved ones. It would be appreciated if all decorations and plantings were kept as close to monuments as possible.
There are never any annual or perpetual care charges. Cedar Hill Permanent and Current Maintenance Funds provide for the care and maintenance of the cemetery. Such maintenance is included in the memorial property purchase price.
The plot owner is the person whose name is on the Deed. Burial rights obtained through inheritance should be recorded with the cemetery. Section 1512(b) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law regarding ownership of lots states that, unless specifically devised by will, (including reference to the specific lot number, section number, and cemetery name), a cemetery lot is inherited by the descendants of the lot owner; spouse, children, etc.
Lot owners may sell or convey any lot, plot, or part thereof upon notice to the cemetery. Such sale shall only occur in those instances where the owner of such lot shall have offered it first to the cemetery corporation at the price paid by the original owner, together with a simple interest of 4% per year.
A copy of the Rules and Regulations is mailed with a copy of the deed. If an additional copy is needed, please contact us. We’ll be happy to provide an additional copy or you can download a copy here. It’s also on display by the Brickhouse on Cedar Hill property.
