Cedar Hill Cemetery

Established in 1859

Cedar Hill Cemetery occupies a commanding site on one of the highest hills just a little south of the Harbor of Port Jefferson. The Cedar Hill Cemetery Association was formed on March 30th 1859. In April of that year thirteen acres, to be used as a cemetery, were purchased by Hubbard Gildersleeve.

Cemetery Notables

  •  

    Charles Tooker, along with a few others established the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company in 1883. He was also the first captain to sail the ferry "Nonowantuc".

    Tuttle Dayton was the first Worshipful Master of the newly reorganized Lodge No. 60 of Free and Accepted Masons in Port Jefferson.

    Zachariah Hawkins was the first postmaster when "Drowned Meadows" was a postal drop station in 1802.

    Lizzie Smith took over the family business, the Smith's Hotel, after her Father's death in 1879.

    Orange T. Fanning organized and became the first director of the areas premier telephone company in 1899. He was also President of the First National Bank in Port Jefferson. It's currently owned by the First United Methodist Church.

    The original "Park City" Ferry was built in 1898 by John T. Mather. Along with the Jones family, the Mathers also produced the largest wooden sailing ship ever built in Port Jefferson, named "Martha Wallace".
